October 2010

The Tipperary Point to Red Hill Bridge lies collapsed in the River Dee. Built originally in the 1890s, it may have been Queensland's oldest pedestrian suspension bridge. In a world that appreciated and valued cultural heritage, its significance would have been applauded and its timbers and steelwork maintained. Today, in regional places as much as in Brisbane, the future of heritage places is assessed in monetary terms and the community of Queensland is the more impoverished for it.
The National Trust of Queensland entered the last two Mt Morgan Suspension Bridges in its Register in 1974. Now there are none.
