BRENNAN &
GERAGHTY'S STORE MUSEUM
EXHIBITION - WE HAVE ARRIVED
Sunday 11 to Sunday 18 May 2008: 10am
to 3pm
Brennan & Geraghty's Store Museum,
64 Lennox Street, Maryborough
Like most stores, Brennan & Geraghty's
Store gave new residents a starting point for purchasing the
essential items for basic living in a new settlement. New
residents required provisions for daily survival and sought
out the grocer, butcher, baker and even the local hotel to
acquire those provisions as well as information about work
and accommodation.
A new exhibition has been developed from the extensive Brennan
& Geraghty Archives with information extracted from customer
accounts. The exhibition delves into the depths of the archives
to uncover information about early customers of the store
and explores the real cost of living in Maryborough during
the late 19th century.
Did you know that in the 1880s a house could be rented for
as little as three shillings a week while a horse could be
rented for as much as six shillings a week, and the average
daily wage was about six shillings a day!

Charters Towers Museum, 36 Mosman
Street, Charters Towers
Visit our museum housed in a late 19th
century (c.1883) commercial building. Our overall collection
represents cultural, domestic, commercial and religious items
that reflect Charters Towers when gold fever hit and the town
exploded and flourished. When gold production peaked in 1889
it was one of Australia's richest goldfields. So rich, for
a few months the Stock Exchange controlled world gold prices.

COMING TO
COOKTOWN 1770 GARDEN TOUR
Thursday 15 and Sunday 18 May 2008
- 9.30am to 11am
James Cook Museum, 50 Helen Street,
Cooktown
In June 1770, James Cook beached the
HM Bark Endeavour at a river mouth near the site of modern
day Cooktown. During the crew's 42 days in the area, while
the Endeavour was repaired, the naturalists Joseph Banks and
Daniel Carl Solander collected many species of Australian
flora.
The garden at the James Cook museum is named after Joseph
Banks. Some of the species collected by Banks and Solander,
and sketched by Sydney Parkinson, are grown here today. Brolga
and Kate Burkitt, the museum's gardeners, have many years
experience cultivating Australian natives and tropical species
from around the world. Kate and Brolga will conduct a tour
of this beautiful tropical garden to celebrate the Heritage
Festival.
