QUEENSLAND HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2010

The National Trust invites you and your group or organisation
to participate in the Annual National Trust of Queensland
Heritage Festival. This program of events is the State's
largest celebration of Queensland's heritage and plays a
key role in fostering an appreciation of our history and
our cultural identity. We will see in 2010 once again a
fantastic variety of community-hosted events being held
across metropolitan and regional Queensland from Sunday
9 May to Sunday 16 May.

NATIONAL TRUST OF QUEENSLAND BUS TOUR
DISCOVER OUR GOVERNORS PAST AND PRESENT!
Tuesday 11 May: 9am to 4pm (approx.)
Join the National Trust when we visit Government House
for a tour and morning tea. Government House, also known
as 'Fernberg' (German for 'distant mountain'), was one of
the first homes built in Paddington. It was erected in 1864
by Johann Heussler, a Brisbane merchant and later a Member
of Parliament. Lunch will be provided at the Kookaburra
Café. We will then be personally guided by the Friends
of Toowong Cemetery, visiting final and historic resting
places of our past governors as well as many other notable
Brisbane identities. The Toowong Cemetery is the largest
cemetery in Queensland and was officially opened in July
1875.
Dress: smart casual and please wear comfortable shoes.
Bus departs Roma Street Brisbane.

The Home Front: Brisbane, The Hunt for the Hospital
Ship 'Centaur'
On the eve of the 67th anniversary of the sinking of the
'Centaur', hear Captain John Foley, co-author of 'The Myth
of Immunity' (1993), tell the story of its loss and the
aftermath. Captain Foley assisted in the search for the
'Centaur' and was there when the wreck was finally discovered
and photographed. Limited bookings available. $5 per person.

RICHLANDS, INALA & SUBURBS HISTORY GROUP INC.
LOCAL' LIVING BOOKS'
Three local 'living books' are presented to the 'readers'
in the audience. Each 'book' gives a five minute introduction
to their story, telling of their part in the community.
This is followed by a twenty minute session of questions
from the 'readers'. 'Readers' are given a written guide
to help them ask relevant questions of the 'living books'.
Morning tea provided. Bookings are essential.

OPEN DAY
Celebrating your Story with Displays
St John Ambulance Australia has been teaching first aid
and home nursing as well as providing first aid volunteers
and community care services in Queensland since 1889. The
displays will highlight the story of St John Ambulance in
this State. It tells the stories of the volunteers who provide
first aid assistance to the community and those who volunteer
in hospitals, and assist elderly and disabled with transport.
It tells of those who provide a telephone service to individuals
who are isolated in their homes and train the community
in first aid skills, including the needs of industry workers.
Young people, the St John Cadets, will tell their stories
of the benefits of St John membership.

EXHIBITION
Girls, Brides then Young Wives - Treasures from a Grandmother
For Heritage Week, the Warwick Art Gallery and Pringle Cottage
Museum have collaborated to present an exhibition which
showcases and celebrates the exquisite handiwork of women
through garments and installations inspired by the 'hope
chest' and a 1913 text 'Ladies Guide'. Also features artist,
June Fiford's tribute exhibition of superior embroidery
which recognises the fancy work of her grandmother and mother.

Irish Interest Group), show you how to prove it. Send along
a specific question for Mary when making your reservation,
or bring one with you, and she will answer it for you. After
morning tea Mary will talk on Irish research and then we
will have question time. BYO lunch if you wish to stay.
After lunch, Mary will be available for more research questions.
Participants will be able to contact Mary by email for a
period of two months for assistance with their Irish research.

FRIENDS OF PEEL ISLAND
EXHIBITION: going to the gums.....the Lazaret on Peel
Island.
Venue:
Fort Lytton National Park Conference Centre
Lytton Rd, Lytton
The Friends of Peel Island and Queensland Parks and Wildlife
Service will host the opening of this exhibition. Fred Bruinsma,
from Queensland Leprosy Mission, is guest speaker. The original
woodcarvings from the 'coloured' church feature in the display
and replicas by artist Troy Robbins will be 'unveiled'.
Photos, correspondence and retrieved items are included.
Musicians will perform, playing instruments from the period,
including the mandolin and the accordion. From 1907 to 1957
some 500 to 700 Hansen's Disease (leprosy) patients (males,
females, adults and children, of all races from throughout
Queensland) were sent to Peel Island. The Exhibition opened
first in 2007 at the Redland Museum and in 2009 was at Redcliffe
Museum, from where the Award winning Book of the Exhibition
was launched.

OPEN DAY - GOVERNMENT HOUSE 'FERNBERG'
SUNDAY 6 JUNE 2010

Her Excellency the Governor of Queensland, Ms Penelope Wensley
AO, will hold an Open day at Government House on Queensland
Day. The year 2010 marks 100 years of vice-regal residency
at Fernberg. The occasion will be an opportunity for all
Queenslanders to visit Government House to view the House
and grounds, enjoy festivities and entertainment.

GARGOYLES AND GOVERNORS BUS TOUR
FRIDAY 23 JULY 2010
Join the National Trust for morning tea at Old Government
House, and then a guide will take us on a fascinating and
entertaining tour of this historic building.
Lunch will be provided at St John's Cathedral. This beautiful
Gothic Revival building has taken over 100 years to complete.
Our guide will take us on a tour through the history of
the building with its inspiring stained glass windows and
stone gargoyles.
